Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF) is an almost sixty-years-old university, located very near the city of Rio de Janeiro, in Niterói. UFF is a public (tuition-free) educational institution, linked to the federal government. It offers 133 undergraduate and 120 graduate programs in all areas of knowledge.
These programs can be found in Niterói, or in 8 other cities in the state of Rio de Janeiro: Angra dos Reis, Volta Redonda, Nova Friburgo, Santo Antônio de Pádua, Campos dos Goytacazes, Petrópolis, Macaé, and Rio das Ostras.
UFF grew exponentially and now corresponds to a population of 3,599 active professors, being 76% with PhD and 16% with Master's degree; 4,308 administrative staff, and 2,150 third-party contractors; 45,572 students enrolled in a undergraduate program, of which 34,607 on-campus and 10,965 Distance Learning. In 2017, the UFF registered 7,439 students in stricto sensu graduate programs, where 4,819 are in a Master's and 2,620 in a PhD program.
The university also ranks with maximum grade at the Institutional Evaluation of the Brazilian Ministry of Education and had 65 programs evaluated with 5 stars at the Guia do Estudante, a 20-years-old evaluation considered reference by universities and students. At the QS World Stars Rating, the UFF ranks 3 stars, with highlights to its accessibility, innovation, teaching quality, and university facilities.
UFF has 29 libraries available to all its staff (employees, students, professors), 580 laboratories, the University Hospital Antônio Pedro, reference in research and cutting edge treaments, a University Pharmacy, as well as a Kindergarten, Elementary, and High Schools. To extend research even further, the UFF offers an Experimental Center at Iguaba Grande, a University Farm (for Veterinary Medicine students) in Cachoeiras de Macacu and a Advanced Unity in the city of Oriximiná, state of Pará, inside the Amazon rainforest.
Talking about culture, UFF is the main spot at Niterói, with an Arts Center, composed by a Theater, a Movie Theater, an Art Gallery, and a Photography Gallery, that have been hosting international festivals and has always been praised by its high-quality equipments and spaces. UFF also counts with strong music initiatives, being in charge of the National Symphony Orchestra, an Ancient Music Group, a Choir and a String Quartet.
Universidade Federal Fluminense offers a wide range of facilities and initiatives, including a University Restaurant, with low-cost meal to students, shuttle buses inter-campuses, a Publishing House (called EdUFF), an Innovation Agency (Agir), Inclusion and Accessibility Office (Sensibiliza), research groups and studies centers.
At UFF, students are also encouraged to take part in extracurricular activities such as LGBTQI+ groups, Religious meetings, Women and Race Equality collectives, Athletics (sports teams), Academic Directories, Outreach Projects etc.
